As spring is upon us, we’ve been reflecting on all of the hard work that our J. A. Rosa Construction family has put in during the last year. 2017 was an incredible year, and we thought that we’d share some of our proudest accomplishments.
As a company, we really enjoy working on projects where we know that we can make a significant impact on their organization – schools, libraries, superior court, museums and municipal centers that serve our community. We’re proud that we can help to keep their doors open while we build and refurbish – without interrupting their day-to-day activities. This has become a real niche for us, and is incredibly valuable to the client.
We’ve also continued to build upon two of our areas of expertise. J. A. Rosa is naturally drawn to these projects because they are interesting to us; but we are also incredibly proud that our portfolio of work is speaking for itself and helping us to secure more work of this type in the coming year.
Our municipal renovations included: The Greater Middletown Military Museum, The Ora Mason Library, The Richmond Center, Danbury Superior Court and the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library. These projects included new room additions, masonry work, elevator or window installs, site work and concrete.
What seems to be the common thread among these complex projects is that they need extreme attention to detail and careful planning. Our team excels at handling jobs that require that the renovations run efficiently, smoothly, and safely – all while many of the buildings are occupied.

General Contract Work
Metropolitan District Employees’ Credit Union
Metropolitan District Employees’ Credit Union (MDECU) in Hartford is a complex job with many moving parts. We are nearly complete with the project, and the construction is coming along beautifully. The facility needed a new sewer system and water, along with two additions to the building, all while keeping the bank open and running for customers. We built a conference space in the front of the building with a training / board room. In the rear of the building, we built a brand-new teller area with ATM, drive-through and drop box. The existing credit union space will be home to the new office for staff members.

The Greater Middletown Military Museum
We are completing work on The Greater Middletown Military Museum, a project that local veterans first envisioned back in 2002. The museum’s goals are to preserve the rich military history of the Greater Middletown area through education and research. The 3,000-square-foot facility is unique. The building is a prefab blue steel structure that overlooks the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial inside Veterans Memorial Park. J. A. Rosa installed SIPS panels, structural insulated panels that are high performance building systems made from foam core that is sandwiched between two structural facings. Other improvements include interior work such as bathrooms and lighting. ▼

The Richmond Senior Center, New Milford, CT
We extended the recreational area for senior citizens at The New Milford Senior Center located in the historic building, The Richmond Center. A former school, one of our primary tasks was to blend the original design of the old school with the new plans for the addition that includes a multi-purpose room and handicap restrooms. The newly renovated space is a beautiful community day center for seniors in town. The recreational room was doubled to about 2,000 square feet, allowing for new programs such as exercise sessions and line dancing to be held while tables remain set up in the space for seniors to socialize. Proper egress was another focus of the renovations, so that large groups of seniors could easily enter and exit the building with enough space for walkers and canes. Construction will finish up early Spring 2018. ▼

Cheshire High School
J. A. Rosa Construction completed the courtyard window replacement project for Cheshire High School, the final phase of a three-year project for the Cheshire Board of Education and Public Works Department. As with many of our other projects, a key aspect of this job was working quietly and efficiently while school was in session. ▼
Ora Mason Branch Library
The expansion of West Haven’s Ora Mason Branch Library was a great project we completed in the past year. The second phase of the project included improving accessibility to the library building, installing an elevator, a new kitchenette area, renovating and repurposing space on the lower level with an accessible entrance, two restrooms, access to a remodeled meeting room, and a program room designed for children’s activities.

Masonry Work
Danbury Superior Court
The Masonry Division of J. A. Rosa is working to finish up a beautiful masonry job at Danbury Superior Court. The job involves replacement of failing masonry retaining walls and guardrails and installation of granite coping stone and new guard rails. We are also building a new sally port, a secure, controlled entryway, to aid in the safe transportation of prisoners at the courthouse. The project was delayed after large structural steel beams were found to be rotted and needed to be replaced. The design professionals and JAR worked together to replace the defective steel and install proper waterproofing and flashing to protect the new structural steel. Construction will wrap up in spring of 2018. ▼

Elevator Projects
Berlin-Peck Memorial Library
A new elevator was installed in the center of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library in Berlin. The new elevator will make the library ADA compliant and will provide access through the attached Community Center building. During the demolition phase of the project, we uncovered solid bedrock beneath the existing slab. We spent 15 days jackhammering the stone so that we could make room for the new elevator pit. ▼

C W Resources
J. A. Rosa Construction completed a two-elevator project at the historic Stanley Works building in New Britain for C W Resources. The project included major reconstruction of two, old, small freight elevator hoist ways into one hoist way for a new Machine Room-Less (MRL) elevator. C W Resources used this elevator as a service elevator as we fully modernized their existing 100-year-old 10,000-pound freight elevator. Both elevators are now in service with rave reviews from ownership.

Looking Ahead: On the Schedule for 2018
Elevator projects continue to be a great niche for J. A. Rosa Construction. A few projects on the books for 2018 are the following:
UConn Health Center, Farmington CT
J. A. Rosa Construction worked with the design team and ownership to cut $270,000 from the budget in value engineering, which assures a first-rate modernization with a budget that was acceptable. We will modernize two 11-story freight elevators for the
